Diplomacy Training Program on Indigenous Peoples Human Rights and Advocacy

Open call for applicants for the Indigenous People's Human Rights and Advocacy Program, a training program for indigenous advocates from the Asia-Pacific Region. This event is in Thailand from 22-28 March 2010. Applications are due 5 February 2010.

The Diplomacy Training Program (DTP) and the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) are calling for applications for the Indigenous Peoples Human Rights and Advocacy program: a Training Program in Human Rights and Advocacy for Indigenous Advocates from the Asia-Pacific Region. This program will Take Place in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 22 to 28 March 2010.


The 2010 program will have a thematic focus on the issues surrounding Indigenous people, climate change and the impact of global corporations on Indigenous Peoples.


The UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2007. The challenge of translating this recognition of rights into reality will be one focus of the program. The program will also focus on ways in Which measures to reduce climate change may impact on Indigenous rights and how Indigenous people can hold businesses accountable for their human rights abuses.


Through expert presentations, group work, role plays, case studies and discussion, participants will explore how to use human rights standards and UN mechanisms available to Protect and Promote their rights. There will also be a focus on developing practical advocacy and media skills. Encourager This residential program participants to learn from each other's experiences, to share knowledge and build practical solidarity networks.

The program is Particularly for Indigenous advocates from Asia-Pacific countries and Indigenous Australia who work for and with non-government and community-based organizations. It is for those who feel a need for greater knowledge and understanding of human rights standards and the UN System to Enhance their work and who wish to further develop their advocacy skills. Individual applicants and those working with National Human Rights Institutions and governmental and inter-governmental agencies will also be considered. Consideration is also given to Ensuring a gender and geographical balance within each course.
